In Hesse, the Upper Germanic Limes runs from Grebenroth to Seligenstadt on the Main. Ramparts, ditches and palisades, reinforced by forts and small forts as well as a large number of watchtowers, formed an artificially created land border up to the River Main. In Hesse, the Limes runs across the densely wooded Taunus and makes a wide arc to enclose the fertile Wetterau region.
