The present Taunusstein was founded only in 1971 through the union of 10 formerly independent municipalities. Nevertheless, this young city can look back on centuries of history. The first documentary reference dates from around 812 A.D. in today’s district Bleidenstadt, but it was already in 778 A.D. when the building of a monastery in “Blydenstadt” was allegedly started.
Numerous cycleways and trails connect the different city districts. More than half of the city area is woodland, in which also the remains of the ancient fort Zugmantel can be found near the district Orlen.
