There are three different sections of the Limes in Bavaria. In Lower Franconia along the Main River, there is a section of the Upper Germanic Limes between Kleinostheim and Bürgstadt, from Mönchsroth to Kehlheim the Raetian Limes runs as a land border and from Kehlheim to Passau as a river border along the Danube.
This subdivision also resulted in two very different appearances. On the Main and the Danube, a natural river border resulted. At the Raetian land border, walls, ramparts, ditches and palisades, reinforced by forts and small forts as well as a large number of watchtowers, formed an artificially created land border.
