In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Lower Germanic Limes runs along the Rhine from Bad Honnef to the German-Dutch border near Kleve. The sites of the Lower Germanic army (exercitus Germaniae inferioris) were lined up like a string of pearls along the ancient riverbank. The Rhine served as the main stationing area for the legions, with important legion camps in Xanten, Neuss and Bonn. Cologne-Marienburg was also the central base of the Rhine fleet (classis Germanica), which operated as far as the North Sea.
