There are two different sections of the Limes in Rhineland-Palatinate. First, the Lower Germanic Limes runs along the Rhine between Rheinbreitbach and Bad Hönningen. From there to Holzhausen an der Haide, the Upper Germanic Limes runs through Rhineland-Palatinate.
This subdivision also resulted in two very different appearances. At the Lower Germanic Limes, the Rhine formed a natural river border. At the Upper Germanic Limes, ramparts, ditches and palisades, reinforced by forts and small forts as well as a large number of watchtowers, formed an artificially created land border.
