Spa Bad Gögging

The spa of Bad Gögging (district of Neustadt) evolved the 2000-year-old former Roman state spa into a modern spa. Well-preserved Roman relics have survived for two millennia.

Sights

Roman bath museum with excavations of parts of a Roman bath complex. Roman fort "Abusina" in the nearby district of Eining. Beginning of the Limes with a replica of a Roman watchtower in the district of Hienheim. Limes thermal baths with 15 indoor and outdoor pools at different temperatures and a Roman sauna. Beginning of the Limes in the district of Eining. Asamkirche Weltenburg Monastery, boat rides through the Danube Gorge.

Roman fort Abusina in Eining

In Eining near Bad Gögging is the Abusina cohort fort, which was founded by Emperor Titus in AD 80 and housed the 3rd Britannic cohort with its 500 mounted soldiers. It is located at the beginning of the Roman border wall and thus defended the transition from the dry to the wet Limes.

The site, which is 147 meters long and 135 meters wide, was renovated in 2010/11 and made more informative for visitors with so-called time windows. The time windows are information boards designed in the form of windows, some of which also have acoustic elements.

In the summer months, there are guided tours for individual visitors on Saturdays (https://www.bad-goegging.de/Media/Veranstaltungen/Fuehrung-durch-das-Roemerkastell-Abusina4?value=2020-05-16). Groups can book guided tours through the Tourist Information Bad Gögging. The site is accessible at all times and free of charge. A newly built viewing platform offers an overview of the site.

Hienheim: Reconstruction of a watchtower

Hienheimer forest: The remains of a watchtower are preserved, as is part of the ruined Limes wall. Watchtower 15/42: Ruin of a stone turret and the circular ditch of the wooden tower is visible. Along the Hienheim-Kelheim road: There is a modern reconstruction of a wooden watchtower with palisade fence. From there you will find a good view over the Danube valley to Eining. To the east of the road stands the Hadrian column, which was erected by King Max II of Bavaria to mark the end of the Limes.

Roman guided tours and trips in Bad Gögging

Visit to the Roman border fort Abusina in Eining and excavations in the Roman bath museum in Bad Gögging. Information: Bad Gögging spa administration.

In addition to the Saturday tours, exciting adventure tours are offered in the Abusina Castle in Eining. With "Romans, radishes and rampage" visitors experience an exciting journey into a time that changed the world. Together with a trained guide and a fearless resident of the castle named Flavia or Flavius, the participants explore the remains of the buildings and fortifications and learn interesting and fascinating facts about the Roman fort in Abusina at the same time.
