The municipality of Künzing with its location in the so-called Altsiedelland can look back on thousands of years of settlement history. After the end of the last ice age in our region, people first settled in this area favoured by the excellent soil quality and formed the first farming structures in the middle of the 6th millennium BC.
The Museum Quintana - Archaeology in Künzing presents finds and features from the Middle Imperial auxiliary fort of Künzing / Quintanis and the surrounding civilian settlement. The fort was built around 90 AD and provided space for a mounted cohort of about 600 soldiers on an area of about 2 hectares. The fort was destroyed around 250/60 AD by Germanic tribes invading across the border.
In 1998, a rare discovery was made in Künzing. On the eastern edge of the camp village (vicus), the remains of a temple of Mithras came to light. Built in the 2nd century AD, the post structure, about 9 m long and 6 m wide, was rebuilt somewhat larger on the same site after being destroyed. A model shows the wooden amphitheatre of Künzing, which was also uncovered by the district archaeology in 2003 in the eastern civil settlement. The structure, which could seat about 600 people, may have been built in the course of a visit by a high dignitary.
The museum is barrier-free, a disabled parking space and a disabled toilet are available.
