Wittelshofen at the Hesselberg

Wittelshofen is located on the southwest edge of the Hesselberg. The stone fort of Ruffenhofen was very close by, with one of the strongest fighting forces in the province of Raetia. From there a road led via Wittelshofen to Dambach Castle.

Sights

Vast fort with circular rampart on the Hesselberg, traces of the Limes and watchtowers, numerous finds of clay and metal objects, starting point of the geological-educational trail to the Hesselberg, numerous cycleways and trails around the Hesselberg. District Dühren: St.-Michaels-Church: frescoes from the 14th and 15th century. Ruffenhofen Roman Park with LIMESEUM

Fort and Vicus Ruffenhofen

The Ruffenhofen fort is located about 800 m south-east of the town of the same name on a hill above the Wörnitz in the border area of the communities of Weiltingen, Wittelshofen and Gerolfingen.

It is about 2 km from the Limes. Today, nothing is visible of the above-average sized stone fort with an interior area of 3.7 hectares. So far, only small excavations have taken place. The extent of the fort and the associated vicus has been known from aerial photographs since the 1980s. Since 1998, the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments has been geomagnetically prospecting, which has led to an exact plan of the fort and the civilian settlement.

The troop camp has an almost square floor plan of 190 x 197 m and thus housed around 500 cavalry soldiers. It was one of the largest and most important Limes forts. The fort and vicus Ruffenhofen is of international interest mainly because it is one of the few forts that has never been built over. Over 40 hectares of land were purchased and withdrawn from agricultural use in order to preserve the Roman monuments for the future. Since the spring of 2003, the area has gradually been developed for tourism as the Römerpark Ruffenhofen.

LIMESEUM and Ruffenhofen Roman Park

The LIMESEUM provides information on the Limes World Heritage Site in the district of Ansbach with the forts Dambach, Unterschwaningen and Ruffenhofen. Life in Roman times is vividly portrayed thanks to the soldier December. In audio stations and in a film, visitors get vivid insights into his everyday life. Special exhibitions and action days complement the offer. Guided tours are offered for groups.

The entire museum can be used without a lift for the disabled. Many showcases are wheelchair accessible. For the visually impaired/blind there is a touch station, a smell station, six listening stations and an audio track for the two small films on the Limes and the museum film.

The Römerpark Ruffenhofen with an area of more than 40 ha is right next to the LIMESEUM. Visitors can find out more about the former Roman fort and the camp village on the circular routes. A playground, various play structures and child-friendly texts on the premises are ideal for a trip with the whole family.
