Document Niedermünster: Legion Camp „Castra Regina“

The legionaries' quarters were initially located under the Niedermünster church, after which the area was occupied by a representative building with underfloor heating. In this building, which resembles a Roman town villa and was used until around 475/476 AD, an official Roman officer probably resided and lived at a time when we previously thought that the Romans had long since abandoned the 'sinking ship'. The excavations, which began in 1963 and have been made visible in the newly established document Niedermünster since 2011, show the historical development from the Roman legionary camp, which was founded in 179 AD, to the new construction of the Romanesque Niedermünster church in the 12th century.

Roman legion camp: Porta Praetoria and enclosing wall is still partly visible today

The only legion camp of the province of Rhaetia is located in the area of today’s historic centre of Regensburg. It was erected at the end of the 2nd century A.D. and is directly related to the Marcomannic Wars. It covers an area of 25 hectares in total. Its enclosing wall was about 8 meters high and 2 meters wide. The wall is still partly visible today. Parts of the Praetorian Gate (Porta Praetoria; main gate), the north gate facing the Danube, are incorporated in the north facade of the restaurant “Bischofshof” (bishop’s yard). The north gate was part of the monumental gates which had defensive towers on either side of them.

World Heritage Visitor Centre

A permanent exhibition welcomes visitors to the visitor centre: arranged according to five thematic areas, visitors can learn more about the World Heritage Site and medieval trade in Regensburg, and gain insights into the city's development and the turbulent everyday life of the Middle Ages. You will also learn about the Perpetual Diet, which shaped urban life from 1663 to 1806. Perfectly prepared, you can then explore Regensburg at your leisure and, thanks to the take-away plans provided in the exhibition, everyone can find exactly the part of the World Heritage Site that interests them most.
