Markt Kipfenberg in the Altmühltal

The market town Kipfenberg is located at the geographical center of Bavaria and is a popular resort in the Altmühltal Nature Park. Here the Raetian Limespassed Kipfenberg in east-west-direction and crossed the Altmühl.
The remains of the former Limes are easily accessible via marked hiking trails (Limes hiking trail). Information boards provide information about all the sights related to the Limes theme throughout the local area.
The Roman and Bavarian Museum Burg Kipfenberg with Infopoint Limes demonstrates the life of the Romans in the province of Raetien, the construction and fall of the Limes and the grave of a wealthy Teuton who served as a soldier in the late Roman army.

Sights

• Roman and Bavarian Museum

• Limes memorial stone at market square no. 8 with information board

• Art-historical tour along the former course of the Raetian Limes

Reconstructed wooden Watchtower

A special highlight is the wooden Limes watchtower WP 14/78 in the eastern part of the market town, reconstructed as observation tower, which documents an earlier state of the border system.
From the tower you can see the kink that the Limes makes at this point, the foundation of the former stone watchtower and a piece of a reconstructed palisade. Here the remains of the Limes can be seen as a clear rubble wall.

Fort Böhming: Defence wall is clearly visible on all sides as rampart

The church in the Altmühl valley west of the village is located within the camp. The fort defense can be seen on all sides as a clear wall. The former fort is only about 800 m situated from the Limes.

Roman- and Bajuwaren museum

The Roman and Bavarian Museum Burg Kipfenberg with Infopoint Limes demonstrates the life of the Romans in the province of Raetien, the construction and fall of the Limes and the grave of a wealthy Teuton who served as a soldier in the late Roman army.
Archaeological finds and reconstructions illuminate the history of the immediate area.

From Kipfenberg to Hienheim, Watchtower 15/31 and 15/42

In the east of the Altmannstein-Mendorf road, the rubble wall of the wall is very well preserved; In some places you can even still see wall shells. Remains of the guard post WP 15/31 can be seen.

A particularly impressive and excellently preserved Limes section

In the west of the town preserved foundation walls from WP 14/77 can be found. From here to the top of the mountain spur between Altmühl and Kälbertal, a particularly impressive and excellently preserved piece of Limes can be seen, which runs here as a mighty dam.
